Folgers Classic Roast ground coffee

by Denise G.
(Epping, NH, USA)

I purchased Folgers Classic Roast ground coffee - exp. date 11/27/11 a few weeks ago believing it was gluten free. I had an almost immediate reaction the first cup but figured it was something else. I tried a cup the second day and the reaction was worse. I contacted the company, which is Smuckers, and corresponded with them. I spoke with Anna who told me that they don't add gluten but it could be introduced during the processing. I thought I would let others know so they can avoid a reaction. The company was very good to work with and apologized for any problems. They are also issuing a refund. I would rather have avoided the whole problem to begin with though, thus I felt it important to let others know. Denise G.

Folgers makes us sick
by: Janet in VB

Took me a while to figure out but Folger's coffee makes me violently ill. Like others writing in this forum, I have been drinking coffee in the morning for years. Over the past 5 yrs, finally determined that whenever I drink Folgers, it gives me the shakes and serious stomach and gastric issues. It's as though I've been poisoned. Oddly, my daughter has had the exact same reaction to Folgers as well. Used to question whether it was the strength of the coffee, but that is not the issue. Very curious what they've done to their product to ruin it for so many. I make sure not to buy Folgers or any store brand packaged as a Folgers knockoff.

Allergens in Folgers!
by: Caroline

I have been drinking organic coffee without triggering allergic reactions for 6 months. I bought Folgers for a party at our home and yesterday I drank Folgers instead of my usual organic coffee. Within an hour I had the first migraine in months- and nausea that lasted all night.

I didn't suspect the coffee today, so I just had a cup of Folgers again an hour ago. I'm having nausea again and another migraine.

Thank you for this post! It's so difficult identIfying allergens when they are not labeled.

I only have an intolerance to gluten- not a full allergy. So I wonder if there are corn ingredients in the coffee or the pesticides they use. Corn derivatives are my main migraine triggers.

Folgers Coffee Gave Me Hives
by: Anonymous

I had my oil changed yesterday, and had a cup of coffee at the dealership. I noticed about 45 minutes later my legs were itching, and I developed hives. Eventually, I had them on my legs and arms.

This morning, they came back on my arms and chest. The only thing that has ever made me break out in hives before was peanuts. I am also a celiac, and I have different reactions to wheat.

I AM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS POST! I called the dealership this morning and they served Folgers Classic Roast. I will never have that again, and it wasn't even good coffee. I'm also having a lot of intestinal cramps, so I'm guessing wheat was in there too. I never would have suspected coffee without seeing this.

Folgers Allergy
by: JAWS Cafe

I specialize in alkaline coffee and was just introduced today to a gentleman who said his father had a peanut allergy reaction to drinking this coffee. I think you should take care in consuming products from companies who process many other food types if you have food allergies. Buyer Beware!

I don't have problems with gluten but,
by: Kitty

I don't have problems with gluten, never have, but we changed coffee brands as we had found some Folgers on sale, and it has been bad bitter, and upset my stomach, given me heartburn and made me nauseous, for several days. The days I didn't drink coffee, I felt fine.

Maybe you're reacting to possible gluten contamination, maybe it's just bad coffee.

I checked out the can this morning and there is a rotten onion or decomposing vegetable odor when I sniff the grounds after opening the can. It doesn't smell normal. As in a nice aroma and pleasant coffee scent.

We are switching to something else.

Horrible Reaction Too!
by: Anonymous

Ugh. I tried drinking coffee a few months back but then I started having seizure issues. I thought it was something else since I was having other stuff going on but I eventually stopped drinking it since I didn't need the caffeine.

I picked it up again, about a week ago, and oh my god...I haven't been feeling the same. I'm hoping to get over this soon.
Thank you for posting your experience. I finally know what's wrong! Huge help!

Thank you!
by: Anonymous

I've been drinking Gevalia coffee from Target for the past couple days, and I've been feeling so sick. I couldn't figure out what was making me sick, but I just heard back from Gevalia: "Please be advised that all of our products have a trace of gluten." Aren't they supposed to put that on the label? Oh well...head's up!

What I've been doing regarding coffee
by: Denise Gregson

I'm so glad my comments were able to help all of you.

Just wanted to let you know that since my original posting, I've only purchased coffee beans and ground them, primarily Market Basket's Colombian. I haven't had any problems whatever doing it this way. So if you don't want to give up coffee, try this. I won't buy any pre-ground coffee at this point.

Folger's coffee
by: Anonymous

Thanks for sharing your experiences. This morning right after tasting my coffee I experienced bad stomach cramps and most of my body got covered with hives and welps.

I've suffered with hives for many years, but this episode seems directly related to a food alergy since the hives are not going away within the couple of hours as usual.

On the contrary, some got swollen and I even have welts on my face --usually the hives show up in my legs and body but never on my face.

Now after reading all your comments I am pretty sure that coffe is what has been upsetting my stomach for a week now, and I even wonder if the welts and hives are also some type of reaction to whatever is in the coffee.

I am celiac, and have been gluten-free for 4 months, but coffee was never an issue before.

Folgers coffee
by: Karen

Thank you for all these postings. My husband has suffered with arm seizures and brain fog episodesfor several years.

No one could find out what caused it until we read the book 'Wheat Belly'. We are both now gluten free and he has been doing wonderful until today.

He had a cup of Folgers coffee and three hours later he had a seizure. Very scary because he was driving the car. A Google search brought me to this website and coffee is now off the list of things to drink. Thank you all.

Gluten Free Coffees
by: Anonymous

No I don't. I've started having problems with all the pre-ground coffees! I think they're adding something to thin it since the cost went up. It really makes me feel awful, but I don't think it's gluten. I just bought a bag of coffee beans today and will try that. I miss my coffee. I have been able to drink DD's coffee that I've purchased at the store without problems. If anyone finds out what they're adding, please post here. Thanks

Folgers and Stomach Pain
by: Anonymous

It took me a few months to finally realize it was the folgers coffee that was causing me so much stomach pain and heartburn. I have drunk coffee all of my adult life with no problems; so I didn't even consider the folgers as the culprit. Now that I have switched to a new brand; I realize just how much discomfort it did cause. I am not sure if it is Gluten that is causing problems; But this product does cause stomach issues.

Not quite the best part of waking up...
by: Krista

After having a cup of Folgers last night from a local restaurant, I immediately starting having stomach cramps, and woke up this morning almost incapacitated. I am not full celiac, and am only classified as having an intolerance. This is by far, the worst reaction to gluten I've ever had... it makes me wonder exactly how much gluten is in there! Well, lesson learned, I suppose. I won't be ordering coffee from there again!

Folger's Columbian Medium-Dark Roast

Same here...a solid week of stomach upset, cramps and headache before I finally thought of the new container of coffee and called the company. Said they can't guarantee that it's not cross-contaminated with gluten. :(

Response
by: Anonymous

I don't know. All the company would say is that they can't guarantee that when the coffee is processed it remains gluten free. I know the Smuckers company does do products that contain gluten, so this batch may have been contaminated.

Was this just an isolated case for the Folgers or is this an ongoing problem? We have used Folgers for more years than I can remember.

Folgers and allergic reaction
by: Dennis

Ever since I went through Chemo for Stage 3 Breast Cancer, I developed severe allergies. For quite some time, I noticed after my morning cup of coffee, I felt sick and had allergic reactions. Today I drank more than usual and because of the reactions, I know I will no longer be able to drink Folgers.
