Gluten Free Cheese

by Kay

Question:

I just have gone completely gluten free because I decided to try some high fiber noodles. I did not know I couldn't eat wheat until then, though I had been gluten free for 2 years because I thought I was having problem with lack of fiber.

But, anyway, after eating the dreaded noodles I can no longer eat 99% foods with gluten - ketchup does not affect me nor does my cookie dough soy ice cream, but that is it.

Could someone tell me what brands and types of cheese is gluten free? I found one veggie cheese that is gluten free, but that is it.

Answer:

You should find that most cheese is gluten free, however there are a few things to watch out for.

Blue viened cheeses are sometimes made from a gluten-containing mould process. But the amount of gluten that would actually be in the finished cheese is negligible and experts tend to agree that these cheeses are safe for those on a gluten free diet.

The Gluten Intolerance Group Magazine reported in Volume 32, page 43...

"Based on the most sensitive tests currently available on the market and our understanding of the minute amounts of mold spores used in the making of the cheese, we may conclude that blue cheese is safe for consumption as part of the gluten-free diet."

Other cheeses that may be suspect are those with additions such as pickles or chutneys, or spicy flavouring.

Shredded or grated cheeses should also be safe to eat as they are prepared using gluten free sources of anti-caking agents normally. It is always best to read the ingredients label, of course, just to be sure.
