Gluten free sausage manufacturers in the UK

I recently discovered a gluten free sausage manufacturer right on my doorstep!

After years of checking the ingredients on supermarket packets, only to find rusk as one of the main ingredients, I was delighted to find some traditionally made bangers that I could eat.

Although it is literally only a short walk from my house to the butchers and deli, I would gladly travel many miles for these sausages, they are that good.

A conversation with the butcher

One morning, when I popped in to buy more sausages for the freezer, I was lucky enough to meet the butcher who runs the farm shop and took the opportunity to have a chat with him.

I asked - "What made you decide to offer a gluten free sausage?"

John told me, "It sort of happened by accident.

"Originally I made beef burgers, the traditional way, with just beef from the farm and fresh herbs. A shopper one day asked if they were gluten free, and after they explained that they couldn't eat anything with breadcrumbs or rusk in, I realised that they were.

"It wasn't long before I was asked the same question about the sausages. At that time they weren't safe for coeliac sufferers but it made me think. My traditional method of sausage making could be adapted to ensure some were gluten free but I was worried about the risks of cross contamination with the "normal" ones.

"So I made the decision to make them all gluten free and eliminate that risk entirely!""

I then asked "When did all this start?"

John explained, "The Tebbit family have farmed here for over 50 years, but it wasn't until 1999 that they decided to take their locally reared meat to farmer's markets and then open the butchers and deli.

"In addition to our own meat we also offer food from other British producers, and as much as possible is sourced from within a 20 mile radius of the farm, but we insist all of our products are of the highest quality."

"The shop is now open from Tuesday to Saturday every week, and we have a courier service that will deliver up to 15 kilos of products, anywhere in England, for just £7.50."

My final question was "Do you have any other gluten free products available?"

"Oh yes!" he exclaimed. And gave me the list below, and told me that he is always adding new gluten free products to the line....

He then concluded, "In addition to the gluten free sausage and butchery side of things, we also offer a range of locally produced honey, preserves, chutneys, rape seed oil (known as Canola oil in the USA) and salad dressings, eggs and milk.

"Then of course there is our deli counter with a variety of English and Continental cheeses, charcuterie, patés and olives."
