I think my baby may need to be gluten free.

by Heather

I'm not yet 100% sure my daughter has Coeliac Disease, but I feel strongly that her doctor may be missing something with her symptoms and the more I read about this disease, the more convinced I become.

I've decided to try a gluten free diet (she has a checkup in 2 1/2 weeks) to see if between now and her next checkup the symptoms may lessen or not.

My sister has this disease so I am somewhat familiar and when my now 11 month old daughter started getting horrible rashes, at about the same time she started eating table foods, my mine went first to a food allergy and then drifted here. Her doctor says it's hives, but I'm noticing spikes in the severity of her rashes and now I realize she may have other symptoms.

At 11 1/2 months old she is barely 18lbs yet is 30 inches tall, way too thin but eats all day and not very picky about what, so long as cheerios and animal crackers are offered (I'm thinking these may be the problems.) Anyway, I would welcome any advice on how to discuss this specific disease with her doctor as well as food ideas for a toddler who loves to feed herself crackers. Thank you.

Devoid of nutrients
by: Dee

Crackers and cheerios, (and also fruit juices) are just empty calories that children can become addicted to. They destroy a child's appetite for healthy foods like meat and vegetables, and the overabundance of starches and sugars leads to many problem behaviors. Just my experience.....

Grains are not necessary
by: Anonymous

Grains are not a dietary requirement. Include lots of breastmilk, meats, veggies and a small amount of fruit and your baby has every thing necessary for proper growth. Focus on these gluten free foods, which are not expensive like special gluten free grains, and it becomes easy to feed your baby. Babies don't need special pablums or any cereal at all. I just stick our meat and veggies supper in the blender with a little water and my baby gobbles it up.
