Is bedwetting helped by being gluten free

by Donna
(Seattle)

My child has none of the classical symptoms of celiac, but he still wets the bed at age 11, and has trouble controlling bowel movements. (As a younger child he had very loose bowel movements although this has improved over the past few years, with no change in diet.)

Has anyone else had any experience to suggest that these symptoms alone might be related to celiac?

In all other respects he is healthy and happy, tall (if skinny, but so is my side of the family) has no abdominal pain, and generally thrives at all levels.

Thanks for sharing any thoughts!

I have been unable to find a scientific link between celiac disease and bedwetting, Donna.

However, I do know a number of people whose children were still wetting the bed after starting school, and who have been diagnosed with the condition, along with an intolerance to dairy foods. On researching the possible connection, it seems that there is more indication that it is the dairy (lactose) issue that may cause the problem.

Perhaps if anyone else has noticed a tendency for children not to become dry at night by the expected age, they will add their comments below.

same symptoms

My child is 11, same symptoms, loose bowel movements as a toddler, which have now cleared up.

He is a bed wetter, and loves carbohydrates. I googled bedwetting and gluten free, because we did have him on gluten free for a while when he was 6 and it improved the bed wetting.

I was thinking more along the lines of diabetes and bedwetting, but your comment was helpful.

Thanks.
