Is it really gluten-free

by Grace S.
(Indiana)

OK. I have been gluten-free for over a year now and just read an article that says there may be gluten in yogurt! How are we suppose to know if it doesn't say "wheat, oats or barley"
on the label?

Also, sour cream, bouillon cubes and blue cheese to name a few. What are the hidden gluten ingredients that we need to know about? Thanks for any help you can give.

I also just read that IHop puts pancake batter in their scrambled eggs! Who would have known!

gluten free?

We avoid the words natural flavors, artificial flavors, and modified food starch. If it doesn't say gluten free, or we haven't received a confirmation from the company saying the it is gluten free, we don't buy it.

Yoplait actually makes a line of yogurt that is labeled Gluten Free. It works for my husband.

Frigo makes a line of Gluten Free Cheese sticks and ricotta cheese.

Walmart does label which dairy products are gluten free. This includes cream cheese.

Is it really gluten free

To Anonymous,

I call eating gluten free a work in progress. I couldn't and still can't take all this info in all at once.

We should start our own "eat this, not that" site! I too was surprised about yoghurt. Look for ingredients like modified food starch, caramel color or malt. If it doesn't say corn or rice starch specifically, avoid it.

I just picked up a bottle of SoBe Acai Berry drink today and after drinking half of it my daughter (gluten intolerant too) looked at it and said "you can't drink this, it has gluten in it" ok, just shoot me now! it did have modified food starch in it.

Try to remember words like modified food starch, MSG ,malt, caramel color. Those are some of the little "sneakers" that can be forgotten.
