Trying to eat gluten free but can't tolerate potato frustration

by Catherine

I am trying to follow the fODMAP diet more closely to help with IBS.

I already avoid lactose.

Going gluten free is helping but am having trouble finding alternative flour mixes or good recipes for baking as I cannot eat potatoes. Nearly all recipes and commercial products such as Doves farm flour contain potato. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced alternative?

I cannot have any flours made from beans or other legumes either. Plus I cannot eat yeast.

potato frustrations additions
by: Judy Doyle

I understand your frustrations. Please also add any of the gums, xanthum etc. They are all processed with potato. Table salt is also processed with potato, sea salt is safe though. Vitamin A Palmitate is also a no-no, sigh. So hard but good luck! and feel better!

A substitute for potato flour
by: Carol

I am sorry to hear of your frustration.

I would suggest making your own gluten free flour, rather than buying commercial mixes which tend to use potato flour as it is one of the cheaper ingredients.

If your recipe stipulates potato flour there are alternatives that can be substituted as per the page I have linked above. These could include arrowroot or tapioca, which are also both starches.
